World Design Summit 2017

As our first official trip of the year, the World Design Summit hosted in Montreal was definitely an experience worth talking about. Ten students in Ryerson’s Xplor Chapter had the opportunity to attend and witness the convention first hand. Upon our experiences, a majority of the convention’s exhibits focused on sustainability and design innovation. From packaging to structural architecture, many of the individuals that we had the chance to talk to were ecstatic on the various topics and ideas that they were presenting. In addition to the exhibit, our attendees had the opportunity to experience a tour of Museum McCord, which contained a display of artworks relating to the concepts of illusions and magic.

Attending this event exceeded our expectations, as we initially thought the event would heavily relate to digital design. To our surprise, we learned that design is applied to all industries, and is a universal term that works in relation to innovation. Coming from Graphic Communications Management, this event broadened our way of thinking, broke the limitations of design being just related to the graphic arts, and expanded on the topic of design as a whole. Reflecting on the event, thinking for design can be considered as a mindset. A way of thinking that accommodates innovation, allows a person to forward-think, and brings out the creative potential in us all.

Some highlights of the trip can be seen in our photo gallery!
